Why Is My Boiler Making Noise?

Banging, kettling, gurgling, whistling or grinding.

What could cause this?

  • Trapped air in the system
  • Kettling from scale or restricted flow
  • Circulator pump wear
  • Water hammer in steam systems from piping pitch or water level
  • Expansion and contraction of pipes

What you can safely check

  • Note when the noise happens — startup, running, or shutdown
  • Note where it comes from — boiler, pipes or radiators

Don't open electrical panels or equipment cabinets, handle refrigerant, work on gas or combustion components, or bypass safety controls.

When it requires a professional

New or loud noises, especially with pressure changes or lockouts, should be evaluated.

How Air Mechanical diagnoses it

We identify whether the noise is air, flow, scale, pump or piping-related and correct the cause.

Every diagnosis starts with the system as it actually exists — equipment, controls, wiring and installation. The equipment has a brand. The problem has a solution.

You don't have to know what's wrong
