Why Is My AC Freezing Up?
Ice on the refrigerant lines, the indoor coil or the outdoor unit.
What could cause this?
- Low airflow — filters, returns, dirty coil or blower problems
- Low refrigerant charge from a leak
- Blower motor or setting problems
- Running in very low outdoor temperatures
What you can safely check
- Turn cooling off and set the fan to On to help it thaw
- Check and replace a dirty filter
- Make sure vents and returns are open
- Watch for water as it thaws — check that the drain area can handle it
Don't open electrical panels or equipment cabinets, handle refrigerant, work on gas or combustion components, or bypass safety controls.
When it requires a professional
If it freezes again after thawing and a clean filter, there is an airflow or refrigerant problem that needs diagnosis.
How Air Mechanical diagnoses it
We measure airflow and refrigerant circuit operation and inspect the coil and blower. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is not a repair.
Every diagnosis starts with the system as it actually exists — equipment, controls, wiring and installation. The equipment has a brand. The problem has a solution.
