Why Is My AC Not Cooling?
The system runs, but the house stays warm — or it barely cools at all.
What could cause this?
- Restricted airflow from a dirty filter, blocked returns or a dirty indoor coil
- Outdoor unit not running — capacitor, contactor or fan motor failure
- Low refrigerant charge, which means a leak somewhere
- Compressor problems
- Thermostat or control configuration
- Undersized equipment or duct problems for the space
What you can safely check
- Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool and below room temperature
- Check and replace a visibly dirty air filter
- Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked
- Look at the outdoor unit: is the fan spinning? Is it blocked by debris or plants?
Don't open electrical panels or equipment cabinets, handle refrigerant, work on gas or combustion components, or bypass safety controls.
When it requires a professional
If the outdoor unit is silent, humming without running, iced over, or the system still won’t cool with a clean filter — turn it off and request service. Running a struggling system can damage the compressor.
How Air Mechanical diagnoses it
We evaluate airflow, electrical components, refrigerant circuit operation, the indoor coil, drainage and controls together, so the repair addresses the cause instead of just the symptom.
Every diagnosis starts with the system as it actually exists — equipment, controls, wiring and installation. The equipment has a brand. The problem has a solution.
